Human rights
Human rights rest on equal worth. The UN was founded in 1945 and adopted the Universal Declaration in 1948. Sweden’s Discrimination Act bans worse treatment because of, for example, sex, age, ethnicity, religion, disability or sexual orientation. The Equality Ombudsman oversees the law. Gender equality means women and men should have the same opportunities. The Convention on the Rights of the Child has been Swedish law since 2020, and violence against children is forbidden. In 2000 Jews, Roma, Sami, Sweden Finns and Tornedalians were recognised as national minorities. The Sami are also an Indigenous people.
