Sweden and the world
Sweden cooperates with Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway in the Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers. It has been in the EU since 1995. The EU’s four freedoms cover people, goods, services and capital. Sweden is also in the Council of Europe and in the UN, founded in 1945. Sida works on development cooperation. Sweden long stayed outside NATO. After Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine in 2022, Sweden applied and became a member in 2024. Total defence has a military and a civil part. Conscription covers both women and men.
