A secular state and a multi-religious country
Sweden is a secular state. That means the state is neutral between religions and you may choose a faith, or none. For a long time the Lutheran church was the only one allowed. The 1951 Freedom of Religion Act made it possible to belong to none. In 2000 the Church of Sweden was separated from the state and became one faith community among others, though it is still the largest. Christian holidays shape the calendar even for many people who do not see themselves as believers. In practice every world religion is present in the country today.
