Traditions and holidays

Many holidays have Christian roots, others are older, and they change as society changes. The national day is 6 June and has been a public holiday since 2005. Walpurgis on 30 April welcomes spring with bonfires. 1 May is the workers’ day. Midsummer Eve is a Friday between 19 and 25 June, with dancing around a pole. Lucia on 13 December brings light in the darkest season. Christmas Eve on 24 December is the main family day for many. New Year, Easter and All Saints’ Day are also part of the year. Traditions such as Eid, Nowruz and Newroz are celebrated in Sweden too.
